A compound microscope has two lenses: the objective lens and the eyepiece lens. The objective lens is located near the specimen being viewed and produces a magnified image that is then projected to the eyepiece lens. The eyepiece lens is located at the top of the microscope and further magnifies the image produced by the objective lens. Together, these lenses produce a magnified image of the specimen that can be viewed by the user. Some compound microscopes also have additional lenses, such as a condenser lens, which is used to focus the light onto the specimen, but the basic design of a compound microscope includes two lenses.
