A Graafian follicle is a mature ovarian follicle that is ready to release a mature oocyte during ovulation. It is characterized by a large fluid-filled antrum, surrounded by multiple layers of granulosa cells. The granulosa cells immediately surrounding the oocyte are called cumulus cells. The oocyte is attached to the follicle wall by a stalk-like structure called the cumulus oophorus. The innermost layer of the follicle is composed of a group of specialized cells called theca cells, which produce androgens that are converted to estrogen by the granulosa cells. The mature follicle bulges out of the surface of the ovary and ruptures to release the oocyte during ovulation.
