These microorganisms are called facultative anaerobes. They are able to switch between aerobic respiration (using oxygen) and anaerobic respiration or fermentation (without oxygen) depending on the availability of oxygen in their environment. Examples of facultative anaerobes include Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.
